How Long Will My Plasma TV Last?

The early technology of plasma TVs has fostered a somewhat negative reputation for this line of televisions.  The excitement of the new technology made buyers excited if the TV even turned on, so when, after only a few years, they were trading in their broken model for a new one, manufacturers were forced to improve on the quality.

There are three main characteristics that are cited as why there has been an improvement in plasma TVs.

  1.  Green phosphors
  2. Lower power usage
  3. Motion adaptive anti burn-in technology

These days, manufacturers make claims of a lifespan of 60,000 hours.  Since Americans average around five hours of television per day, this leads to a life of roughly 33 years.  Whether the manufacturer claims are accurate or not are disputable.  However, even at half of that, it would seem that the television would outlive the individual’s desire to have it, as people have a tendency to continually upgrade as new technologies become available.

Hopefully the point has been made that the buyer can rest assured that they will generally not need to recycle their new plasma TV any faster than their own taste dictates.  In the next post, we will look at ways you can do your part to lengthen the life of your plasma TV.
